Our roots
Beginning In 1999, Chris and Jenny England embarked on a modest horticultural venture, planting a few experimental espaliers in the backyard of Chris’ parents’ home.
What began as a small trial quickly blossomed into a full fledged passion. As demand grew, the need for more space became clear and the purpose built nursery in Baxter on the Mornington Peninsula was created.
Today, Merrywood Plants is not just a nursery, but a thriving community of dedicated team members. Merrywood grow an extensive array of formal and informal espaliers, each nurtured with the same care and enthusiasm that sparked our journey 25 years ago.

Merrywood Plants proudly supply the horticulture industry with an extensive selection of formal and informal espaliers, ranging from fragrant blooms and compact shrubs to fruit trees perfect for any vegetable patch.
Our team is dedicated to the skilled craft of espalier, applying meticulous care from the initial planting to the final pruning. We embrace a hands on approach that, while time consuming, guarantees the highest quality and health of our plants. Our commitment is to deliver robust, beautifully trained plants that bring life and beauty to gardens across Australia.
PLANT TYPE
CAMELLIAS
Evergreen leaves and elegant flowers, camellias are one of the plants we love to train. Merrywood grow a range of Espalier Sansanqua, Japonica, Hybrid and Floribunda camellias.
Sasanqua Camellias are the first to flower every autumn. Their smaller foliage and flowers enable them to tolerate a sunnier, more exposed position in the garden.
Japonicas with their large, glossy green leaves have the widest range of flower size, form and colour. They bloom in winter and thrive in semi shade to shaded positions.
Hybrids and Floribunda Camellias, the new kids on the block, are bred to suit a variety of garden conditions.
Merrywood espaliered camellias come in 25cm, 33cm and 50cm pots with square lattice supports. Also available are a limited number of special releases, such as diamond lattices and formal shapes.

FORMAL
A formal espalier often takes longer to create, but the impact of these living sculptures is worth the extra wait. Their structured elegance adds a touch of sophistication to any garden.
Formal espaliers are all meticulously pruned and trained by hand. Most of the range is crafted using the multi-cordoned method, featuring a central main trunk with horizontal branches. We offer limited numbers of other formal shapes, including Candelabra, Serpentine, Belgium Fence, and Diamond shapes.
Merrywood can also custom grow a formal espalier to suit your specific needs, The result being a unique and personalised addition to your garden.

CITRUS
The citrus tree, with its fragrant blossoms and edible fruits, is a beloved staple in many Australian gardens. Their evergreen nature and delightful produce make it easy to see why this humble tree is so popular. At Merrywood, we offer a range of espaliered citrus trees. Each variety is chosen for performance in a diverse range of conditions, ensuring that our customers receive only the best.
Our informally trained citrus espaliers are available in a variety of pot size including 33cm, 40cm, and 50cm, all accompanied by a square lattice for easy support and aesthetic appeal. For those looking for something a bit more unique, we also offer a limited number of 50cm formal espaliers, perfect for adding a touch of elegance to any garden. Whether you are an experienced gardener or a novice, our espaliered citrus trees are sure to bring beauty and bounty to your outdoor space.
